Ever since legendary game show host Alex Trebek announced last March that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, rumors have swirled that the 79-year-old would be making a retirement announcement in the near future. But, one of Trebek’s co-workers says that he doesn’t have any plans to retire, despite having to go through a second round of chemotherapy in September.

“He has no plans to quit, and is absolutely not announcing his retirement [anytime soon],” the coworker told People Magazine.

Back in October, Trebek said that he wasn’t sure how much longer he would be the host of Jeopardy because of the side effects from his treatment. He explained that they would just “play it by ear” and “keep chugging along” until they either win or lose.

In recent weeks, Trebek has been spotted in Los Angeles and he appears to be fit and healthy. He even hosted his annual holiday party for his team on December 20th at Feinstein’s at Vitellos in LA, and surprised his guests by booking American Pie singer Don McLean to perform at the event. Trebek told the crowd that McLean’s performance was “a real treat” and he could officially take it off his bucket list.

Trebek and his wife Jean Currivan Trebek also sat down with Michael Strahan for an interview that will air on January 2nd, and Trebek admitted to Strahan that he has struggled with depression since receiving his diagnosis.

“It’s always tough for caretakers because she has to deal with her worrying about my well-being and also dealing with … I’m not always the most pleasant person to be around when I’m experiencing severe pain or depression, and she has to tread lightly around me,” said Alex.

For Jean – who has been married to Alex for 29 years and shares two children with him – the hardest part of her husband’s cancer battle is seeing him in pain, but she can’t help him.

Alex and Jean Trebek’s interview with Michael Strahan will air during an ABC special on January 2nd. Trebek is also hosting the ABC prime time Jeopardy tournament “Greatest of All Time” with contestants Ken Jennings, Brad Rutter, and James Holzhauer, starting on January 7th.
